What is the "Afya 4 Kesho" project?

"My philosophy is that education is easy to provide where people are eager to learn and to teach. So make them eager to learn. Make them eager to teach. Deliver accurate facts in a thoughtful, fun and responsible manner. Empower people with knowledge so they can feel compelled to empower others. In my eyes, this could leave a more sustainable and lasting impression- exactly what I'd hope for and what I aim to do."

Jambo!! Karibu!

In June 2014 I embark on yet another journey to the continent of Africa. Having last visited Africa (West) in 2008, volunteering at a rural hospital in Ghana, this time around it's to East Africa I go- with Kenya on the itinerary. With a few words and basic phrases of Swahili/ Kiswahili now in my vocabulary I'm eagerly looking forward to the laughs I'm sure to get when I go to speak words to the locals for the first time =P Kiswahili changu ni kibaya sana!!! (My Swahili is terrible!!!) hahaha.

On a more serious note, I'm headed to East Africa with a mission in mind: to work with local medical staff at rural clinics assisting with HIV testing, counseling and treatment/preventative education which will allow me the opportunity to asses the needs of the local communities and to better develop effective educational modules for HIV/STD prevention and health maintenance.

During the three weeks I will be committing to this visit it is my personal (and very specific) goal to gather data, supplies and arrange schedules needed for the purpose of hosting a class with an intent to "train the trainers." What does that mean? It means that I intend to gather data needed in order to create and implement an educational infrastructure specifically meant to train and educate local people about HIV and other STDs and other health and wellness issues for the purpose of them going on to form and train other groups and individuals. Thus it made sense to call this project "Afya 4 Kesho" loosely translated: Health for Tomorrow. These efforts to provide access to education and reliable resources are imperative in an area of the world which is still very impacted by HIV and the effects the disease has (both short-term and long-term) on an individual and entire community.

My philosophy is that education is easy to provide where people are eager to learn and to teach. So make them eager to learn. Make them eager to teach. Deliver accurate facts in a thoughtful, fun and responsible manner. Empower people with knowledge so they can feel compelled to empower others. In my eyes, this could leave a more sustainable and lasting impression- exactly what I'd hope for and what I aim to do.

Your contributions will go toward the costs of educational materials- including the development of posters, printed educational pamphlets and brochures, classroom supplies, classroom space, guest speakers, ..etc. and that is just to name a few.

I hope you'll find my project worthy of financial backing and thank you ahead of time for your contributions- big or small- everything makes a HUGE difference. Thank you for stopping by, reading and showing support. Much love!

- Asante Sana,
Pam

HinderHD is a small advocacy organization in the making. Founded on my own belief that health and access to healthcare is a human right, this organization will address issues surrounding health and wellness, especially where disparities in health education and access to care are evident.

The name, HinderHD, was chosen with some thought.  The word "hinder" means to: stop, halt, impede, obstruct or prevent. "HD" is short for "health disparities" which are defined here as the inequalities that exist in health and access to healthcare across various racial and ethnic groups, socioeconomic groups and based on sexual orientation, etc.

Thus the name HinderHD is a combination of these definitions and elements, together representing the organizations purpose: to prevent and stop health disparities and disparities in access to health education and care.

By:

  1. Providing education, and promoting access to accurate and current educational materials & instruction

      as well as

  1. Identifying, and then bridging people to available resources-

The aim is to close gaps in knowledge and understanding about critical diseases and health & wellness so people can have the ability to make sound and educated decisions that might impact their health status in the short or long term and to enable them to access care by linking them to appropriate resources.

It is important to note that HinderHD is a work in progress. As I work towards obtaining a 501 (3)(c) status the mission statement and additional details about this larger project will be updated here; so check back often to see the progress!

"Afya 4 Kesho"

loosely translated:

Health for Tomorrow.

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."

in a speech to the  Medical Committee for Human Rights, 1966
